The Boston Celtics were eliminated by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, and it is clear that the team fell short of their goal, as they intended to win a championship this season.
This failure led to the front office making moves, with the team trading for Kristaps Porzingis this offseason. It seems as though the team plans to extend the big man, with NBA insider Marc Stein suggesting that they’re willing to add two more years to his contract.
“The Celtics, as I reported Wednesday, are strongly expected to tack two years onto Porzingis contract this summer. The 27-year-old is eligible for a maximum two-year extension worth $77 million that could take his total compensation in green well past $100 million. Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens backed up that idea Friday at his first post-trade media availability when he said “we hope so” when asked about extending Porzingis’ contract beyond next season.”
Kristaps Porzingis opted into his $36.0 million player option to make the trade to the Boston Celtics happen. The team trying to keep him long-term is a smart play as if they don’t give him an extension, he could become a free agent again next off-season.
During the 2022-23 regular season with the Washington Wizards, Kristaps Porzingis averaged 23.2 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 2.7 APG while shooting 38.5% from 3PT range. He is one of the true stretch centers in the league, and it’ll be interesting to see how he fits next to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
The Boston Celtics Are Not Done Making Moves
There is no doubt that the move for Kristaps Porzingis is only the beginning for the Boston Celtics. In fact, a previous report suggested that the team has more trades lined up, or is at least in more trade conversations.
It will be interesting to see what other moves the Boston Celtics end up making. Though Kristaps Porzingis addresses the team’s relative lack of size and their rim protection, the team still needs a point guard that can run the offense, though it is possible that they will stick with Derrick White and Malcolm Brogdon. Hopefully, we see them get another difference-maker on the team, and we’ll see whether they end up doing so.
