The choice between Nick Foles or Carson Wentz has always been very clear to the Eagles. Even after the 2016 2nd overall pick tore his ACL last winter, Philly was always invested in him to lead the franchise.
What they weren’t expecting was the monumental success they found without him, winning a Super Bowl with Nick Foles as the one throwing the football.
Still, it seems even despite the success they found with Foles, the team remains committed to giving Wentz the keys to the castle. Although, former Packers quarterback Brett Favre thinks otherwise. In a chat on SiriusXM radio, the NFL legend spoke up about the situation, saying that Foles should be their guy for the future.
“Totally different than Nick Foles. Nick Foles, to me, is more of a (Tom) Brady-esque type quarterback. Very limited in what he can do but very, very good in what he does. He’s a pure pocket passer and he’s great at dishing it out and he’s proven that he’s clutch. He did it this past week, he did it last year, he’s done it time and time again, and he’s proven that he can win the big games. That, I think, is what we have to look at, or the Eagles, or anyone in a similar situation — it’s about winning, it’s about being clutch, doing really what you expect your players to do. And he does it as well as anyone.”
Favre is exactly right in his description of Foles. The Arizona star has proven that his pocket passing and late-game decision making is enough for the Eagles to win a Championship. Meanwhile, can the same be said about Wentz’s abilities? That remains to be seen.
It’s certainly a hard call to make, but one the team has to do quickly. With a number of options on the table for Foles, he’ll almost certainly be finding a different team if he doesn’t change the Eagles minds about his role. And something tells me they won’t be changing their minds.
