Carmelo Anthony played for 19 seasons in the NBA, and he’d have heard his fair share of crazy things in that time. In light of the Deandre Ayton situation, the 39-year-old was recently asked what was the craziest excuse he had heard for a player missing a game.

“Somebody slipped in the shower,” Anthony said. “I heard it from somebody, saying that they slipped in the shower, but also somebody that was close, on my team, that said they slipped in the shower. Slipping in the shower is crazy. First of all, what are you doing in the shower to slip in the shower? Why are you doing that much movement in the shower?”

Anthony says you should just stand and shower. I can imagine someone slipping maybe if the floor is just a little bit more slippery due to soap or shampoo or something along those lines. It’s not all that common, but it could have happened. As for who the players might be, Anthony didn’t share that information.

Paul George Revealed Danny Granger Gave That Reason For Missing A Game Against Anthony

There is one particular incident that does come to mind when you think of an NBA player slipping in their bathroom. Paul George once revealed on Podcast P that Danny Granger told the team that he slipped in the shower and couldn’t play a game against Anthony.

“Danny was originally supposed to play,” George said. “We get a call that Danny slips in his bathtub, sprains his ankle, and so he’s out for the game… He slipped and fell in the shower.”

(starts at 2:14 mark):

George revealed that the joke was Granger had Melo-itis as he didn’t want to guard him. It could very well be that George told this story to Anthony when they were teammates on the Oklahoma City Thunder. Granger could potentially be one of the players that the 10-time All-Star was referring to here, but we can’t be completely sure.

There are some other relatively famous instances of players slipping in the shower that we know of. In 2014, Rajon Rondo claimed he broke his left hand by slipping in the shower. Five years later, in 2019, John Wall slipped while walking toward the shower, and ruptured his Achilles.

What Happened With Deandre Ayton?

After missing 11 games due to tendinitis in his knee, Ayton was all set to return to action for the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night against the Brooklyn Nets. He ended up not playing in the contest, though, but not because his knee was bothering him. Ayton missed the Blazers-Nets games due to ice sheets surrounding his house.

“Ayton tried for hours to combat the sheet of ice leading out of his neighborhood and the team sent people out to help as well, but to no avail, so he is out for tonight’s game versus Brooklyn.”

While you’d find the whole thing to be bizarre, Anthony actually seemed to indicate it can be a real problem. He played for the Trail Blazers for two seasons from 2019 to 2021 and would know just how bad things can get in the area.

The Trail Blazers surprisingly beat the Nets 105-103 despite Ayton, who is averaging 13.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game this season, missing the contest. The big man is now listed as probable for Friday’s game against the Indiana Pacers, and you’d think he will play in that one.
