Charles Barkley’s time in the NBA was definitely noteworthy. The former MVP was a superstar in the league and was one of the best players in the league. But Barkley would also find himself caught in controversial situations from time to time. One such situation involved Mark Jackson in the New York Knicks.

During an appearance on a late-night show in 1990, Charles Barkley revealed how he and Mark Jackson got caught in an unnecessary situation for betting on free throws during a game. Barkley and Jackson had made unserious bets during the playoffs the previous year, and Jackson told him to put the money he hadn’t paid back on the line for free throws.

“It was blown out of proportion. We were kidding around. He wanted to bet some money on a couple of free throws I was taking… We didn’t realize other people would take it seriously…”

“We kind of had a hypothetical bet, last year in the playoffs, which I didn’t pay him. Let’s bet the money you owe me and I made the free throws and we were very lucky to win the game… It was unbelievable, people blew it way out… “

Barkley and Jackson were clearly kidding around with their bets during the game. But in the midst of the betting scandal that Pete Rose and the baseball world were dealing with, the NBA could not take that risk. Both players were fined $5,000 each for their actions.

Charles Barkley Has Lost Plenty Of Bets

Charles Barkley is no stranger to making bets. Most recently, he bet Shaquille O’Neal $1 billion that the Miami Heat would beat the Atlanta Hawks in the play-in game. Well, Barkley got that bet pretty wrong and is now running quite a debt to Shaquille O’Neal.

Barkley clearly didn’t take the incident too seriously. But it is unfortunate that Barkley and Jackson had to be punished for a friendly wager due to the circumstances that were surrounding the sport at the time.
