In the last couple of seasons, the Phoenix Suns have remained one of the best teams in the NBA. Thanks to the dynamic duo of Devin Booker and Chris Paul leading the charge alongside Deandre Ayton. But off the court, the Suns have been going through a troublesome time.
A few months ago, the owner of the franchise, Robert Sarver, was caught in two decades-long controversies of racism, misogyny, homophobia, and several other disturbing behaviors. As a result, Sarver was forced to put the Phoenix Suns up for sale alongside his WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury.
There were many rumors about the value of the franchise. NBA analyst Bill Simmons predicted the team could be sold for around $4 billion, and that prediction turned out to be correct. He also named billionaire Mat Ishbia as a potential buyer, and it turns out Ishbia will be the one purchasing the organization.
Charles Barkley Is Furious With The NBA
Considering the fact that Sarver still gets to walk away with $4 billion didn’t sit well with the Hall of Famer. Charles Barkley explained in detail while criticizing the NBA for the deal.
(Starts at 6:05)
“And I brought this up. I said, ‘Yo man, that’s not fair. That ain’t right.’ He (Sarver) paid $400 million for that team (Suns). For him to pay $400 million for a team, do really, really bad things behind the scenes, and they force him to sell it, and he gets $4 billion dollars? I want that deal. There’s not a single person in the world that’s not like ‘Wait a minute, where is the punishment?’ There’s no punishment.
And there’s not a single person watching this show, there’s not a person behind these cameras that says, ‘I got a business and it’s worth $400 million, and I was harassing women, being racist at work,’ and they’re like ‘Well, we don’t want you around here anymore, we’re gonna give you $4 billion dollars. Hey, I love the NBA, it’s given me every single thing in my life. But this is not right man. This is not right, period.”
At the end of the day, as Charles mentioned, there’s simply no punishment for Sarver regarding his behavior. He may no longer be an owner in the NBA, but he still gets to walk away with $4 billion.
