Charles Barkley was on commentary for TNT’s broadcast of Capital One’s The Match 2024, and he was at his hilarious best as usual. At one point during the broadcast, it was mentioned that the German word for hippopotamus is “Nilpferd,” and Barkley hilariously roasted Shaquille O’Neal by calling him a hippopotamus.
“I know a hippopotamus, he works on TNT on Thursday nights,” Barkley said.

That was just a hilarious shot at O’Neal, who is in the TNT studio for Inside the NBA on Thursdays, and it’s far from the first time that Barkley has mocked him in this fashion. A few years ago, Barkley famously roasted O’Neal by calling him Shrek to his face.
It is always a lot of fun to see these two hilariously take shots at each other and you better believe O’Neal will have something to say the next time they meet on air. Unfortunately for Barkley, he has already given his colleague some material to roast him with too.
DJ Khaled Beat Charles Barkley In A Best Of Three Golf Match
Prior to the actual match, which featured Rory McIlroy, Max Homa, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson, Barkley and record producer DJ Khaled faced off in a best-of-three contest. The Hall of Famer won the first round, but then lost the next two, as Khaled triumphed.

Barkley is a notoriously bad golfer, but losing to Khaled is a new low for him. He loves the sport dearly but clearly doesn’t have any talent for it. O’Neal might never let him live this down, along with the fact that he never won an NBA championship.
As for that actual match, this was the ninth edition and the first one to feature LPGA players. McIlroy would emerge victorious eventually in a sudden-death, closest-to-the-pin playoff, and raised $2.4 million for charity in the process.
Barkley himself has also taken part in one of these in the past, as he and Phil Mickelson beat Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning in 2020.
Shaquille O’Neal Revealed How His Relationship With Charles Barkley Was Fixed By Their Mothers
Getting back to Barkley and O’Neal, they weren’t always such good friends. In fact, they had an infamous fight on the court back in 1999, but it was right after that, that they grew close. O’Neal revealed his and Barkley’s moms teamed up to fix their relationship.
“Charles’ mother and my mother have been best friends for 15, 20 years. I never knew that. So the time that me and Barkley had a fight, when I got to the locker room, my mother was on the phone and Charles’ mother was on the phone.”
“Charles’ mother was like, ‘Don’t you hit my boy. I was like, ‘Who is this?’ She was like, It’s Charles’ mom. Oh, hello, ma’am. How are you doing? You all don’t need to be fighting. I just talked to Charles. He going to meet you in the hallway. You all hug it out and you all stop that.”
Well, all was fine after that. While Barkley and O’Neal have some tense moments on television from time to time, it hasn’t affected their relationship in any way. O’Neal now even views Barkley as an older brother of his, and it is wonderful to see just how fond they are of each other.
