Throughout their illustrious NBA careers, Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley were known not only for their exceptional basketball skills but also for their fiery personalities. During a 1999 NBA game between the Lakers and the Rockets, a defining moment occurred in the relationship of two players with a history of on-court altercations. Surprisingly, it was their mothers who played a significant role in resolving the conflict and fostering a unique friendship.

After the fight was televised on National TV, Shaq gets a call from his mother. And this call would change the dynamic between him and Chuck forever.

Shaquille O’Neal said:

“Charles’ mother and my mother have been best friends for 15, 20 years. I never knew that. So the time that me and Barkley had a fight, when I got to the locker room, my mother was on the phone and Charles’ mother was on the phone.”

“Charles’ mother was like, ‘Don’t you hit my boy. I was like, ‘Who is this?’ She was like, It’s Charles’ mom. Oh, hello, ma’am. How are you doing? You all don’t need to be fighting. I just talked to Charles. He going to meet you in the hallway. You all hug it out and you all stop that.”

From that point on, Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley’s relationship underwent a transformation. What began as a fiery rivalry turned into a genuine friendship, characterized by mutual respect and love. Both players credited their mothers for helping to make this change happen.

Why Did Shaquille O’Neal And Charles Barkley Get Into A Fight?

Chuck and Shaq found themselves entangled in a fiery on-court confrontation. After a series of heated exchanges under the basket, Barkley bounced the basketball off O’Neal’s head, igniting a volatile situation. The tension escalated as O’Neal retaliated with a punch, leading to a full-blown wrestling match on the floor. The altercation resulted in both players being ejected from the game, leaving NBA fans stunned.

Many expected these two stars to never talk again and continue their rivalry. But their mothers put a swift end to it and these two legends are now like brothers.

Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley are now working together on TNT as NBA analysts. Their on-air banter and playful jabs at each other are a testament to their brotherhood. And this was all possible because of their mothers, Lucille O’Neal and Charcey Glenn.
