The heart and soul of the Golden State Warriors is entering free agency this summer, as Draymond Green declined the player option on his contract to test the market.

Green is widely expected to come back to the Warriors but is currently without an NBA contract. Charles Barkley was commentating on Green playing golf in a contest and mocked Green’s free agency, asking whether he’s coming back to Golden State or headed to Detroit.

“Draymond talk a lot for a guy who ain’t got no job. He ain’t got a job, he should be nice to me. Dray, you going to Detroit on this red-eye tonight or you coming back to the Bay?”

Green’s potential suitors are disappearing, as the Pistons may be the only team left on the market with the money for Draymond. That’s his hometown team looking to change their culture after hiring Monty Williams, so Green is an interesting choice for them.

The 32-year-old forward was linked to the Sacramento Kings, but an offer is unlikely after they extended Harrison Barnes to eat into their cap space this summer.

Draymond Green’s First Free Agency Ever

Throughout his career, Green always extended with the Warriors before hitting the open market. After the team didn’t extend him during the regular season, he exercised his well-earned option to opt out of the $27.5 million he was owed this season for a more lucrative long-term deal.

It seems the Warriors have no choice but to give it, as Green is integral to the competitive fabric of this team. The addition of Chris Paul essentially gave them long-term cap flexibility, which allows the Warriors to accommodate a big Draymond contract in the future. He averaged 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds. and 6.8 assists this season and could come back on an annual average salary of over $30 million.
