In the midst of a new era for the Charlotte Hornets, marked by a change in ownership with Michael Jordan’s monumental $3 billion sale of his share, the expectations and hopes for the team are cautiously optimistic. The Hornets faced their share of challenges last season, with LaMelo Ball’s prolonged injury sidelining him for a significant portion of the campaign. However, Ball returned to action, showing sparks of his potential to guide the franchise to greater heights.

The fortunes of the Hornets often pivot around LaMelo Ball, the charismatic face of the team. The young point guard, if he can stay healthy and continue his development, holds the key to the Hornets’ aspirations. Charlotte’s journey this season will largely depend on Ball’s leadership and playmaking abilities, as well as the collective contributions of a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers.

As the season unfolds, the Hornets aim to find their footing and potentially secure a playoff berth, but the path forward remains challenging. In this analysis, we delve into the depth chart, position by position, to examine the roster’s potential and how it aligns with the team’s ambitions.

Point Guards

LaMelo Ball, Theo Maledon, Ish Smith, Frank Ntilikina

The Hornets’ backcourt is anchored by the charismatic LaMelo Ball, whose health and performance are pivotal to the team’s fortunes. After a promising rookie season cut short by injury, Ball returned, displaying flashes of his potential to impact the game on both ends. Even while facing injuries, LaMelo averaged 23.3 points, 8.4 assists, and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Supporting him is Theo Maledon, a capable backup with solid ball-handling and playmaking skills, providing versatility in the backcourt. Ish Smith brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned veteran, ensuring stability and leadership in the second unit. Frank Ntilikina, known for his defensive prowess, adds depth to the point guard rotation, providing a defensive spark off the bench.

Shooting Guards

Terry Rozier, Nick Smith, Amari Bailey, Bryce McGowens

High-scoring guard Terry Rozier plays a pivotal role in the Hornets’ offense. His ability to create shots and score from beyond the arc is crucial for the team’s success. In LaMelo’s absence, Rozier averaged 21.1 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Nick Smith, a promising young talent, is expected to develop and contribute to the Hornets’ backcourt depth, providing athleticism and energy. Amari Bailey brings potential scoring ability to the team, adding to the Hornets’ future prospects. Bryce McGowens, with his scoring acumen, offers a promising source of offense off the bench, helping to bolster the team’s scoring options.

Small Forwards

Gordon Hayward, Brandon Miller, Leaky Black, James Bouknight

Versatile forward Gordon Hayward remains a key piece of the Hornets’ roster. His scoring, playmaking, and leadership are vital for the team’s overall performance. Brandon Miller, an emerging talent, is expected to develop and contribute as a young forward, providing depth and athleticism in the position. The No. 2 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft will be keen on establishing a strong partnership with LaMelo.

Leaky Black is known for his defensive prowess, adding a critical defensive element to the Hornets and contributing in various facets of the game. James Bouknight, with his scoring ability and versatility, offers offensive depth off the bench, aiding in the team’s scoring efforts.

Power Forwards

PJ Washington, JT Thor, Cody Martin, Miles Bridges

PJ Washington is a versatile forward who can stretch the floor, making him a key piece of the Hornets’ frontcourt. JT Thor, a developing talent, brings athleticism and shot-blocking potential, contributing to the team’s frontcourt depth.

Cody Martin, known for his defensive tenacity, adds valuable depth to the frontcourt rotation, providing versatility and defensive skills. Miles Bridges, with his high-flying athleticism, serves as an exciting contributor and scorer for the Hornets, enhancing the team’s offensive options. But Bridges’ future is in doubt as he was arrested for violating a protective order.

Center

Mark Williams, Nick Richards

Promising rookie Mark Williams brings shot-blocking and rim protection to the Hornets, offering potential for growth and defensive impact in the paint. Nick Richards contributes to the center position with rebounding and a physical presence, aiding in the frontcourt rotation. Together, this depth chart of talented players at each position will play a significant role in shaping the Hornets’ success in the 2023-24 NBA season.

Hornets Need LaMelo Ball To Survive

The Charlotte Hornets‘ fate seems inexorably linked to the health and performance of their charismatic point guard, LaMelo Ball. Last season, when Ball was sidelined with a significant injury, the Hornets struggled, culminating in a lottery pick, which brought them the talented Brandon Miller. The hope now lies in the hands of Ball and Miller, as the potential faces of the franchise’s future.

While LaMelo Ball possesses immense potential, it’s essential to acknowledge that Brandon Miller, like most rookies, will need time to learn and develop into a consistent contributor. The Hornets’ journey forward appears uncertain as they balance the present and future.

If Ball were to succumb to injury or underperform, the Hornets’ prospects take a noticeable dip, with the looming possibility of yet another lottery season. Even with Ball performing at his peak, the Hornets’ ceiling seems to plateau at a playoff appearance, rather than a legitimate championship contender. The team faces an uphill battle, as they lack the star-studded talent that often characterizes deep playoff runs in the competitive NBA landscape.

For the Hornets, the forthcoming season remains a pivotal juncture, hinging on LaMelo Ball’s ability to stay healthy and lead the team to a brighter future. Their quest for success is anchored in the dynamic play of their young point guard, but the challenges ahead underscore the need for a broader, more talented roster to elevate the Hornets to greater heights.
