Minnesota Timberwolves star D’Angelo Russell didn’t mince his words when he called out Zion Williamson’s style of play.

The Wolves suffered a crushing 119-118 defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Pelicans. Williamson had a monster night pouring in 43 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Williamson’s style of play though came under some criticism from the Timberwolves guard, Russell who didn’t pull any punches when he spoke to the media in the aftermath of the loss.

“He ran through my guy, and took the ball He’s playing football, we playing basketball. We can’t touch him or guard him, so good for him.” – D-Lo after Zion’s 43-point career night

The Wolves had contributions from Anthony Edwards and Rusell (27 points each), but it wasn’t enough to pull off a win. With this, Minnesota suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.

Zion Williamson Has Been In Scorching Form For the New Orleans Pelicans

After missing the entirety of the last season, the power forward has been in scintillating form for the New Orleans Pelicans this season averaging 25.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

His dominance when he’s at his healthy best was on full display against the Timberwolves, stacking up his career-high digits with 33 of those points coming in the second half. Per a BBC report, Williamson explained his mindset:

“I watched a lot of old-school players and I tried to figure out their mindsets, and all their mindsets were the same. People remember winners.”

“So whenever that time comes for me to be done with the game of basketball, I want people to say that he was a winner. And CJ (McCollum) looked at me and said, ‘If you wanna be great, this is the time to step up.’ And that was all the motivation I needed.”

His evening had everything — class, explosiveness, and panache as he even dunked one on Rudy Gobert before nailing a free throw in the final minutes of the game to help close it out in favor of New Orleans.

Williamson’s form and health will be crucial for the Pelicans who are prime playoff contenders with a 22-12 record. They’re placed first in the West and will hope that their star players continue in the same vein.
