LeBron James is one of the greatest players of all time, and there’s no doubt that he has had a fantastic career in the NBA. He is still dominating with the Los Angeles Lakers even in the twilight of his career, and LeBron James is currently averaging 30.2 PPG, 8.5 RPG, and 7.0 APG.
When he was in high school, LeBron James had a lot of hype, but it was unclear whether he would live up to any of it. Many believed that he would be considered a bust if he didn’t live up to people’s expectations.
With that being said, some people know greatness when they see it. Danny Ainge knew how good LeBron James would be, even before he was drafted in 2003. An article by Grant Wohl from Sports Illustrated that was written in 2002 shared Ainge’s words, where he claimed that there are only four or five players he wouldn’t trade to get LeBron James.
“If I were a general manager, there are only four or five NBA players that I wouldn’t trade to get him right now,” says former Phoenix Suns coach Danny Ainge, who was in Trenton to see LeBron play for the second time. “I love Jason Williams at Duke, and I’ve heard of the Chinese guy [7’6″ Yao Ming], but if LeBron came out this year, I wouldn’t even have to think about it. I’d take him No. 1.”
Danny Ainge is well-known for being a good evaluator of talent. Even recently in his executive role with the Utah Jazz, he managed to get an All-Star level player back when sending out Donovan Mitchell in a trade. He clearly knew LeBron James could become an all-time great, and it’s clear that James has managed to fulfill his potential.
LeBron James Believes That He Is The GOAT
After he recently broke the scoring record, LeBron James claimed that he is the GOAT. He stated that he was going to let people decide who their GOAT is but noted that he is willing to take himself against any player who “has ever played” in the NBA.
“I’m gonna let everybody else decide who that is, or talk about it… I’m going to take myself against anybody who has ever played this game. But everyone is going to have their favorite… but I know what I’ve brought to the table, I know what I bring to the table every single night, and what I can do out on this floor. I always feel like I’m the best to ever play this game…
There is no doubt that LeBron James has a solid GOAT case based on his longevity and dominance over a period of time. However, the majority of the public still clearly believes that Michael Jordan is the GOAT.
If LeBron James wins more championships in the future, it is quite possible that more people will end up viewing him as the GOAT. As of right now, that happening seems unlikely, but things can easily change in the future.
