- Danny Green won a title with the Lakers in 2020
- Green explained he would see his Lakers ring in the three rings he has so far in his career
- Green is a free agent as of August 25
Former Los Angeles Lakers sharpshooter Danny Green caused quite the furor on social media when he said he would sell his 2020 Championship ring when given a choice between one of the three rings he would do away with.
And while there was enough flak that went his way, it’s worth noting the reason behind Green’s decision.
“I could probably make the most off the Lakers one. And that’s probably the one you want to keep. San Antonio is a little older, so it’s a nice ring. But it’s not as nice as Toronto. The Toronto one is ridiculous. It’s the biggest one.”
He further added that the Lakers ring would be the one that would rake in the most moolah.
“I can possibly get the most money for it. It was a bubble year. It’s a Kobe year. And you know, Lakers fans, it’s a bigger fan base throughout the nation.
“Now, obviously, Canadians are special man. They treat you unbelievably. So it would be between those two. But I’ll probably keep the Toronto one and sell the L.A. one. Because I’ll get the most for the L.A. one, and the Toronto one I think, I wouldn’t say I like the most, but I think it’s, I wouldn’t say more meaningful but like, you know.”
Green last won a championship with the Lakers in 2020. He had previously won with the Toronto Raptors in 2019, and the San Antonio Spurs in 2014.
The 14-season NBA veteran has been a journeyman in the league, spending stints with multiple teams which also includes the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The three rings set him apart as one of those unique players with rings won with different franchises.
Danny Green’s NBA Future Remains Unclear
This summer, Danny Green became a free agent on August 25 and remains available to be signed by any of the teams in the NBA. While the 36-year-old has never been an All-Star, he has always had an impact on teams.
A knee injury sidelined him for the majority of this past season, and he played 11 regular season games for the Grizzlies and the Cavaliers collectively. averaging 5.4 points and 1.3 rebounds shooting 44.9% from the field and 43.2% from the three-point range
With the Lakers, who are reported to be still interested in reuniting with the guard, he averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. On the career front, Green averages 8.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 42.1% from the field and 40.0% from the three-point range in 830 regular season appearances.
On a contending team, Green will still be a valuable asset, and while his future for now remains unclear, it’s only a matter of time before he finds a few interested parties.
