Deandre Ayton has had a rough two seasons with the Phoenix Suns. He is integral to the team’s success but saw them not offer him a contract extension until they matched an offer sheet he signed with the Indiana Pacers.

He’s had spats with Monty Williams on the bench but it seems his morale has completely changed. Adding Kevin Durant to the roster will surely do that and Ayton has been salivating at the prospect of playing alongside KD. Their latest scrimmage together proved to Ayton that he is right to be excited about the team’s future.

Ayton pulled the curtain on a private scrimmage the Suns had during practice and revealed it was incredibly intense, with him seeing things done on the court that he’s never seen before. Naturally, Kevin Durant was the highlight for him.

“Maaaan, one of those ones where you have those scoring matches behind closed doors. You don’t know what happened with the folks in there, it was one of those. It was physical and things you’ve never seen before. Then KD just getting in his bag and doing it on my team. Wearing the same jerseys. It was pretty cool and just seeing him and Book, he’s scoring, Book scoring, 3. Dump it off to me. It’s insane man.”

Ayton will be crucial in protecting the Suns’ backline and using his size to dominate the interior, knowing KD and Devin Booker are operating on the perimeter with Chris Paul running the show. At their peak, this team is going to be scary when they’re all healthy.

Championship or Bust For Phoenix?

The Suns have made one of the most aggressive mid-season trades of all time to change the fortunes of the franchise after 2 failed years in their title quest. Adding KD to this core should make them easy championship favorites and puts pressure on the franchise to maximize their time with the 16-year veteran.

Losing this season may still be justified due to the Suns needing to adjust to their new roster and rebuild their depth over the summer. However, they should be favorites on the court from the moment they start playing together.
