There was a time when there was a lot of animosity between Matt Barnes and Derek Fisher, but the two are now on good terms. In fact, Fisher is the head coach for Barnes’ two sons, Isaiah and Carter, at Crespi Carmelite High School and a video went viral of him coaching them, with his ex-rival in the stands.

They say time heals all wounds and a long time has now passed, since their infamous fight back in 2015. Back then, Barnes and his then-wife Gloria Govan were in the process of getting divorced, and the two were no longer living together.

Govan was still technically married at the time, but she got into a relationship with Fisher, which her husband wasn’t aware of. One night, Barnes received a call from his son Carter, informing him that Fisher was at their house in Los Angeles, which infuriated him.

He was in Santa Barbara at the time for training camp with the Memphis Grizzlies and drove over, to fight Fisher, his former teammate on the Los Angeles Lakers. The two men did get into it once Barnes arrived in what was a tense situation. Fortunately, no one ended up in serious harm after the dustup and while the cops were called, Barnes was never charged for the incident.

For years after that, Barnes traded barbs with Fisher and Govan, but the two parties seem to have made amends since. Fisher and Govan got engaged in April 2018 and then got married on July 17, 2021. At some point in between all of that, fences were mended, with all three of them coming together for Isaiah and Carter’s birthday in 2020.

So, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Barnes doesn’t have an issue with Fisher coaching the twins. He was announced as head coach at Crespi on August 7, 2023, and the team is off to a 3-0 start under him this season. Fisher’s stepsons aren’t the only ones he’s coaching there either, as his son, Drew, also transferred to Crespi from Sierra Canyon this year.

Matt Barnes Debunked A Famous Myth About That Wild Night

While Barnes has never even tried to deny that he was furious that night and wanted to fight Fisher, there is one part of the story that he’s always had an issue with. Some reports at the time claimed that he drove nearly 100 miles that night to go fight Fisher and Kanye West referred to it in his song “30 Hours” as well.

The lyrics were “I’m about to drive 90/ 90 miles like Matt Barnes just to whoop a n***a ass” and thanks to that, the public at large believes that’s what happened. Barnes made it clear during a crossover episode of The Pivot and All The Smoke, that it was just a 15-minute drive.

“That was the urban legend because Kanye rapped about it,” Barnes said. “I really only drove 15 minutes… I was back in the house firing one up in like 45 minutes. Quick roundtrip.”

Even someone as hotheaded as Barnes would have realized at some point if he drove for that long, that this was a bad idea. When it’s just 15 minutes, though, you don’t have enough time to process the whole situation and in his rage, Barnes went overboard.
