Dillon Brooks has made a reputation for himself as someone that talks a lot on the NBA court. While he’s received his fair share of negative attention, even his biggest haters cannot deny that Brooks is a brilliant defender.

He finally received an accolade for his defensive prowess in 2023, being chosen to the All-Defensive Second Team. But some thought he should have made it to the First Team. Brooks himself recently spoke about it.

“I’m not sure. It doesn’t matter to me,” Dillon Brooks said in an interview with The Athletic. “I know every single night, guys are thinking about me. It’s in their mind before the game even starts. So I’m not worried about that. It’s just one thing you put down as a good accolade and try to keep replicating every season. But I’m happy that I made the team.”

It’s hard to quantify defense, so much of it depends on the team too. Last season, Brooks played with the Defensive Player Of The Year, Jaren Jackson Jr. and they were both big contributors to the Memphis Grizzlies playing top defense. Brooks had the highest defensive win shares of his career in the 2023-24 season with 2.4. His impact will surely get even bigger playing for Ime Udoka on the Houston Rockets

Dillon Brooks Might Be Over-Hated At This Point

Dillon Brooks was overrated for a while there, most often by himself. He talked a lot of trash to other stars, including LeBron James, which backfired on him in the worst way. But he has quickly gone from being over-hated to being overrated.

Brooks is an excellent defender in a league where top defenders are becoming rare and it makes sense that he got paid $80 million for his services. And people are defending him now, as JJ Redick recently did

“I saw all the memes on Twitter about him needing to learn Mandarin because he was gonna play in China. The motherf***er just signed for $80 million. I’m sorry for the language but he just signed for $80 million. He’s a good player, a valuable player. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I want a Dillon Brooks on my team. I want a disruptor, I want a pest, and I want a guy that can defend at his level.”

Dillon Brooks now has the opportunity to get a fresh start and rebuild his reputation. Sounding cocky in interviews may not be the best idea, but his fiery temperament is what makes Brooks who he is. Many NBA fans will be waiting to see what he can do next season, so he has no option but to perform when given the chance.
