Doc Rivers: “We Allowed Michael Jordan To Grow Into Greatness. With LeBron, We Didn’t Allow That”

3 Min Read

Everybody has their opinion on the GOAT debate. Some say Michael Jordan is and will ever be the GOAT, while others make the case for LeBron James or any other NBA superstar. However, the pick is seemingly always between Bron and Jordan, two of the most memorable individuals we’ve seen stepping on an NBA court.

You have to appreciate the greatness of both players, but, according to the Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, they didn’t have the same path to the elite of the game. He explained that when MJ made it to the NBA, he surprised everybody, while Bron already had this tag of the next big thing attached to him.

“It took Michael seven years to win an NBA title because he didn’t trust, he didn’t trust the system, he wanted to dominate himself, he didn’t get the importance of using his teammates and using everyone else. The difference between Michael and LeBron is, when Michael came to the league, he surprised everybody how great he was. When LeBron came to the league they expected him to be great. Michael in some ways we allowed him to grow into greatness, we didn’t allow LeBron that and he still overachieved. LeBron is better than anyone ever thought. We should go back and read articles about LeBron coming into the NBA and then say he overachieved that, it’s remarkable. He barely gets hurt, he always shows up, he’s had some of the biggest clutch games in NBA history, yet no one notes it.”

It’s hard to disagree with Rivers. Ever since he was a junior in high school, he was labeled as the ‘Chosen One’, so you know all the hype around Bron and his NBA career. In terms of titles, he hasn’t surpassed MJ, but Bron has made sure to leave his mark on the game. He’ll go down as one of the best players in NBA history and he hasn’t even retired yet.

He still has a chance to increase his legend and leave a bigger legacy in the game. There is nothing that people have asked him to do that he hasn’t done.
