Domantas Sabonis Admits Players Have Been Intentionally Going For His Injured Thumb
Amid a magical season for the Sacramento Kings, All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis is gearing up for his third All-Star appearance this weekend.
With averages of 18.8 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game on 61% shooting, Sabo's performance is a huge reason for the King's surprising success so far this season.
More impressively, Domantas has been doing it all with an injured thumb that he's had to nurse all season long. In an interesting reveal to The Athletic, Sabonis even revealed that there are players who try to take a swipe at it intentionally.
"Yeah, there’s been a couple players," said Sabonis. "I’m not gonna say names, but there’s been a couple players. Some players even joke, but we’re close. But sometimes you’re like, ‘Damn, that looked pretty (suspect). Like, how are we going for a rebound and you grab that area?’ You know what I mean? Sometimes, it just happens, you know? And I don’t say nothing..."
The NBA is a highly competitive league, so it's not too shocking to hear about what lengths some players will go to get an edge in the game. For Sabonis and the Kings, the fact that they are doing well enough to warrant such extreme measures is a good sign of their trajectory as a franchise.
How Far Can The Kings Go This Season?
With Sabonis, De'Aaron Fox, Keegan Murray, Harrison Barnes, and Kevin Huerter, Sacramento has a solid core of players with the perfect blend of experience and youth. So far, it's been good enough to sport the 3rd best record in the West.
In the playoffs is where things will get more complicated for the Kings. As good as they have been all season long, they don't have the star power that teams like the Suns, Mavericks, or Clippers have.
Instead, it will be up to Sabonis and Fox to steer the ship and keep their team competitive when the playoffs finally arrive. If the Kings finish this season with the 4th seed or higher, it will surely go a long way toward helping them advance past the first round.
Either way, this season has been a major success story for the franchise so far and credit has to be given to Sabonis for not letting anything, not even a thumb injury, derail his season.
