- Dominique Wilkins fired multiple agents during his career for stealing from him
- One of Wilkins’ former agents stole $600,000
- Wilkins believes such individuals should be in jail
Just like so many other NBA players, Dominique Wilkins also had to unfortunately deal with crooked agents, who stole money from him. Wilkins had recently sat down for an interview on Vlad TV, where he spoke about having to fire multiple agents during his 15-year NBA career.
“I think the biggest thing that the athletes do is put too much trust in an agent,” Wilkins said. “Back in those days, I would say, they would steal from you. So, they used to say I was unstable because I fired anyone who took something from me, ‘Oh, he done fired four agents.’ Yep, I would fire a fifth or sixth if you steal from me.”
Wilkins was then asked what was the most money an agent had stolen from him.
“Probably like $600,000,” Wilkins said. “… Even if it’s $100 it’s still stealing, it doesn’t matter. So when I dealt with those things, I’m like, ‘You gotta go.’ So, able to have a really nice life now because I was able to do those things.”
(starts at 1:37 mark):
$600,000 would be a lot even today, and for this to happen to Wilkins back during his playing career is really disturbing. As the 63-year-old says, stealing even $100 is really unacceptable, and it’s a shame that multiple agents stole from him.
We have, unfortunately, had to hear so many stories along these lines. Charles Barkley revealed his first agent stole $100 million from him, which left him broke after four seasons. Wilkins and Barkley were able to get through this, and the former now reportedly has a net worth of around $16 million, but there would have been many who weren’t as fortunate.
Dominique Wilkins Believes Such Agents Should Be In Jail
One of the more famous cases of an agent stealing money from athletes is that of Peggy Ann Fulford. She was an agent for the likes of Dennis Rodman and reportedly ended up stealing over $1 million from him.
Fulford was arrested in December 2016, and almost two years later, she got a 10-year jail sentence. Wilkins believes such individuals should remain in jail, for violating the trust that these athletes had put in them. He thinks putting someone else’s life in shambles for personal gain is an absolutely terrible thing to do.
Incidents like these aren’t commonplace nowadays for NBA players, fortunately. You have to be certified by the NBA Players Association to become an agent now, and they conduct thorough checks to ensure that the players get fair representation.
NBA Players Now Do Not Talk About Business In The Locker Room
Back during Wilkins’ career, players would speak about some of their business dealings in the locker room, but that’s no longer the case now. The nine-time All-Star says the athletes now are corporations first and players second. Everyone is focused on building their own brand, and it’s become a personal thing.
Those details are only revealed to their tight inner circle and the information does not get out. As long as the players take care of their personal well-being, though, Wilkins doesn’t really have a problem with it. At the end of the day, that is really all that matters.
