It is definitely unfortunate that a lot of people have had to deal with that, and it is clear that the city still has a lot to work on in that regard.
However, former star Dominique Wilkins had a different experience with the city of Boston. He pointed out that he lived for five years in Boston after his retirement, noting that he was “treated very well” and “didn’t see” any racism on a personal level.
“I lived in Boston 5 years after I retired. I really liked it a lot. I lived out in the suburbs in a place called Dover, Mass. out near Wellesley, and I was treated very well. So for me, I didn’t see any of that personally.”
It is definitely good to hear that Dominique Wilkins was able to avoid the racism that goes on in the city of Boston. However, other players have dealt with a lot of racism from Celtics fans throughout the years. There is no doubt that Dominique Wilkins had an outstanding career, mostly making his name with the Atlanta Hawks. From the 1983 to the 1994 season, Wilkins averaged 26.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He also made nine All-Star appearances and seven All-NBA teams and also won the 1986 scoring title.
Though he wasn’t an All-Star-level player during his one season with the Boston Celtics, Dominique Wilkins averaged 17.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. The 1994-95 Celtics managed to make it to the playoffs but lost in the first round to the Orlando Magic.
Dominique Wilkins Spent A Year Playing Overseas Basketball In Greece
After he finished the 1994-95 season with the Boston Celtics, Dominique Wilkins ended up going overseas and playing in Greece for Panathinaikos. During his time with Panathinaikos, Wilkins averaged 20.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game in the EuroLeague.
During his time in Greece, Wilkins managed to lead Panathinaikos to the EuroLeague championship, notably winning the EuroLeague Final Four MVP award as well. He also won the Greek Cup with the team, also winning the Greek Cup Finals MVP award.
After his season with Panathinaikos, Dominique Wilkins did manage to come back to the NBA, signing with the San Antonio Spurs. Wilkins averaged 18.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists with the team, and it is clear that he was still good enough to play in the league despite his advanced age.
