NBA legend Dominique Wilkins has shared a deeply personal and impactful story of leaving his hometown in North Carolina due to racial discrimination. In a candid interview with Vlad Lyubovny on Vlad TV, Wilkins revealed the pivotal incidents that led him to make the courageous decision to move away:

“It was two things. One was the cross, which you can’t get no more racist than that.”

“The other thing I remember coming out of a department store, and someone followed me out and said, Hey, a security guy, he said, We’re going to have to arrest you because you stole this tape.”

“And they had threw a tape in a planter right next to the store… And it was crazy because I’m looking at him. I’m like, I had $3,000 in my pocket. And I said, I’m going to steal a $5 tape. Are you kidding?”

“But I knew what it was. It’s because of the decision I made. So my cousin, who was on the police force, he was the one who they called.”

“We’re going to sort all of this out because we know what’s going on.”

“We’re gonna take you home, we’re gonna pack up everything, we’re gonna get you guys out of town tonight. So we packed up my whole family in a truck… We left to Atlanta that night. And I never went back until my statue was unveiled.”

Wilkins also expressed his gratitude to the University of Georgia for its pivotal role in supporting him and his family during this critical time. The university assisted with the relocation process and provided the necessary help for a smoother transition to Atlanta.
