The Los Angeles Lakers may have had a productive trade window, but Draymond Green has his doubts about one of their reacquisitions.
The Lakers reacquired point guard D’Angelo Russell from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team, eight-player trade that also saw Russell Westbrook finally shipped to the Utah Jazz.
And while Russell has been instrumental for Minnesota, averaging 17.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 6.2 assists, the Golden State Warriors star has some concerns of his own. Speaking on the ‘The Draymond Green Show,’ he said:
“The Lakers got better, and the reason they got better is not necessarily because they got better players because Russell Westbrook is still Russell Westbrook. But D’Angelo Russell’s a hell of a player, Malik Beasley is a hell of a player, a good player, and Jarred Vanderbilt is a good player.
He also went on to add that while Russell’s playmaking and his ability to dictate the pace of the game was something LA could benefit from, he was also looking at the fit.
“I think the thing that I will watch in this trade is DLo’s fit next to [LeBron James]. That’s going to be a big thing because DLo plays at a certain pace. … And so just to see that fit and how that’s all going to come here I think that’s important to how this trade will be judged.”
It should be worth noting that Green and Russell did share the floor for a bit when the latter suited up for Golden State. Plus, he’s seen James play for years now, so there might be some food for thought when the forward shared his opinion.
D’Angelo Russell Reacts To Rejoining The Los Angeles Lakers
D’Angelo Russell entered the Lakers fold when the late Kobe Bryant was on the final stretch of his career. While the former did develop his skills, the team did a massive overhaul.
The guard left the Lakers in 2017, and not many thought he would return, but this trade deadline saw the front office make a beeline for the Timberwolves guard, and he is now a Laker once more. Speaking to the media, he said it was all about Bryant.
“When I reflect on my time here in the past, it’s all about Kobe. I had some growing pains out there on the court but all that was really a blur. Appreciate Kobe when I was here. Wasn’t something I really did cause I was young. I was just kinda figuring it out. But as soon as I left I appreciated him more. Now that he’s gone I appreciate him even more.”
There’s no doubt that the Lakers’ much-needed shooting gets a major boost with Russell in the mix.
All eyes will be on the returning Laker when he takes the floor against the Golden State Warriors. The chemistry, the fit, and his skills will face a litmus test against a seasoned Warriors unit.
