LeBron James may just be the funniest NBA player on the planet. During the Lakers vs. Rockets matchup, James seemingly walked over to Christian Wood and gestured to smoke something before passing the imaginary item to Wood.

One fan thinks it was just another unique handshake.

Another fan jokingly called LeBron a bad influence, referencing the time when Bronny posted an Instagram story while smoking a blunt.

Another fan tried to imply James is a bad role model for doing this.

One fan said he gets to do this because he’s the GOAT.

Most fans were just calling LeBron the funniest player in the league for this.

He did with Anthony Davis as well.

There are so many references James could be making with this. Was he smoking that Rockets pack? Unlikely, as the game was ongoing and the Lakers were trailing when he made the gesture. Could it be a reference to smoking a layup or a shot? Possible, but it just seems so out of the blue and random.

We know that most of the NBA doesn’t care about marijuana anymore, especially after the league removed it as a banned substance. But LeBron has never been seen smoking anything outside of cigars and hasn’t been a cannabis advocate.

The Rockets are giving the Lakers an intense fight. They already hold a win over LA from earlier this season, the biggest loss of the Lakers season so far. This time they do have Anthony Davis, who has 14 points two minutes into the third quarter. The same applies to James, who’s sharing the offensive load with Davis as the Lakers trail 55-49 at home.

Marijuana In The NBA

The league has shied away from allowing marijuana for years until the Bubble brought changes that have since become permanent. Marijuana was on the league’s banned substances list for years, with players facing potential fines and suspensions for positive tests. While that didn’t stop many players from partaking in the substance through the ’90s and 2000s, it did stigmatize the substance that was fairly common to use by NBA players.

The league made a temporary provision during the Orlando Bubble to allow players to skip marijuana testing. Given the players were all cooped up in hotel rooms and not allowed to do much of anything outside play basketball, it made sense to allow it then to keep players in the bubble happy. However, the league never went back to the old days of it being a banned substance.

Kevin Durant claims he played an instrumental role in speaking to Adam Silver to get the substance allowed

“I actually called [Adam Silver] and advocated for him to take marijuana off the banned substances list. I felt like it was becoming a thing around the country and around the world. The stigma behind it wasn’t as negative as it was before. It doesn’t affect you in a negative way. He agreed… I just enjoy the plant, it’s simple as that.”

Durant is one of the most open smokers in the league right now and is a great example of the substance not limiting players from reaching their full potential. While the rest of the sports world will take their time to catch up, the NBA is allowing its players to use marijuana in a recreational as well as medical capacity.

The face of the league referring to smoking marijuana on a live broadcast would’ve resulted in a suspension years ago, but it’s just a funny moment today.
