- Former NBA veteran has big expectations for Antony Davis
- Mitchell says Davis may be more valuable than Giannis if you consider his outside shooting ability
- The Lakers star has a lot to prove entering the 2023-23 season
Lakers big man Anthony Davis is far from the perfect basketball player, but he’s undoubtedly one of the NBA’s best players right now. A beast on both ends of the floor, Davis plays like an MVP when he’s healthy and former league swingman Sam Mitchell even went so far as to compare him to the 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“I can make an argument that AD is more valuable than Giannis come playoff time because of his ability to shoot outside and make free throws.”

While Giannis has length and durability on his side, he can’t shoot the ball like AD can and it somewhat limits his options offensively. For Giannis, his limitations can sometimes become a hindrance for the Milwaukee Bucks, even if they often find ways to overcome them.
In the case of Davis, he may be less available than Giannis, but his well-rounded game and lack of glaring weaknesses set him apart from the 7x All-Star.
In truth, Davis, 30, has been the secret to success for the Purple and Gold and it’s through his presence that the Lakers have managed to stay competitive with LeBron approaching 40 years old.
Pressure Is Building For Davis To Take The Reigns From LeBron
The Lakers have been trying their best to hand the baton from Davis to LeBron, and even LeBron himself has been working to make the Lakers Anthony Davis’ team. So far, however, Davis has yet to really fill that role for the organization, no doubt in part due to the various injuries which have prevented him from taking the floor.
But if the Lakers can get just one fully healthy season out of the Brow, it may be all they need to bring home the Larry OBrien trophy. And with season averages of 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game last season, there’s a chance Davis could raise those numbers and put himself in the MVP conversation next year.
So if you’re Davis, this upcoming season could be a huge chance for him to silence the haters and prove that he’s capable of leading the Lakers to glory.
