Fred VanVleet has been a star since he broke out for the Toronto Raptors and helped the franchise win its first-ever NBA championship.

But he’s not exactly a household name, which means he doesn’t have to deal with being constantly swamped by fans. He recently spoke about his experiences.

“Yeah, all the time,” VanVleet said on a podcast when asked if he can just go around town normally. “Especially if I’m hooded up, hat, good.

“That’s why I don’t go nowhere with NBA players. They too tall. Like, even if people don’t know who they are, they know they just don’t fit. Like anything 6’2 or 6’4 and up, and they just know wherever you go.

“It depends on where I’m at. But grocery store, just running around, yeah. I definitely can get where I need to go by myself for sure.”

Fred VanVleet is 6’1, which is the sweet spot in terms of height for normal people. Being 6’1 is tall enough without being too tall, although it does make him one of the smallest players in the NBA.

Fred VanVleet was an All-Star in 2022 and has averaged 19.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game for the last three seasons. He also just signed a 3-year deal worth $130 million with the Houston Rockets

Despite his accolades, he keeps a low profile, which means that he isn’t liable to be recognized a lot wherever he goes unless people mistake him for Drake.

Fred VanVleet Got The Largest Contract For An Undrafted Player In NBA History

What makes Fred VanVleet so unique is that despite not being very popular, he has made the most of his successes. In 2020, Fred VanVleet signed a contract with the Toronto Raptors worth $85 million over four years.

And his new contract with the Houston Rockets worth $130 million over three years means Fred VanVleet has signed the biggest contract of any undrafted player ever

While this may not be enough to get him recognized, if he can become the leader of a young and talented Houston Rockets team, that might boost his profile immensely.

At 29 years of age, VanVleet could reach a point where he struggles to hit up the grocery store. That is if all goes well.
