- Gilbert Arenas mistook Austin Rivers for Andrew Tate
- The topic of discussion on his podcast was Rivers’ take on Damian Lillard’s trade request
- Arenas also shared his thoughts on Dr. J’s all-time Top 10 list
Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas caused quite a funny stir when he mistook Austin Rivers for the controversial Andrew Tate.
In a recent episode of his Gills Arena podcast, the focus was on Rivers’ take on Damian Lillard and his trade request, except the former’s name was not mentioned. When one of the panelists spoke about how Rivers would review the podcast, Arenas hit the confusion button.
“I thought he was in jail.”
The former Wizards star was referring to Tate’s arrest in Romania in December 2022 and later realized he made an error.
“Oh, I thought that was Andrew Tate.”
Minus the hair, both Rivers and Tate look eerily similar. So, it’s understandable why Arenas had his case of mistaken identity.
Just to refresh, Rivers had shared his take on Lillard’s trade request. “If you’re a free agent then you can choose where you’re gonna go. That’s the business. But when you’re not and you sign a deal … that’s part of the business. If you get traded somewhere, you gotta go play,” the guard shared.
About which, the Arenas and co. had a take before this hilarious blunder. But the discussion did resume soon after, and it was business as usual on Gills Arena.
Gilbert Arenas Has Been Vocal About His Takes
After calling time on his sport, Arenas has been vocal about all things basketball, and topics not pertaining to the game. Recently, he slammed the former NBA legend Julius Erving for his controversial Top 10 list that omitted some modern-day greats.
“When people have Bill Russell in their top 10, I gotta question your basketball knowledge,” Arenas said. “I’m sorry. Because he and Wilt (Chamberlain) played in the same era. One averaged 50 and 30 rebounds, the other one averaged 16 and 20 rebounds.
“Which means one was just a hustle player,” Arenas continued. “Like, you hustled against white folks. All you can score was 16 points a game. You couldn’t even break 20 and you want me to put you in the top 10? Everybody’s five f***ing 10 and there’s only eight teams and you’re playing against the White folks, right?”
Trust Arenas to share his unabashed opinion, and join the segment of fans who took shots at Dr. J. Like everyone else, Arenas has his opinions, and he’s not afraid to put it out there.
