Dwyane Wade may be out of the game now, but the dude was an absolute killer back in the day. As one of the best players of his time, the guy achieved amazing success on the court and showed everybody what he could do when at his best.
Gilbert Arenas and the Washington Wizards found that out the hard way during their countless battles against the superstar guard.
On one occasion, Arenas even got into trouble with one of his own teammates for daring to trash talk the multiple-time All-Star. He recently told the story in an episode of his podcast:
“I remember I had to guard him,” Arenas said. “Larry [Hughes] got fouled. Larry got two fouls quick, and I had just finished talking s— too. … This is the first time Larry Hughes told me, ‘Yo bro, man, shut the f— up. If you ain’t guarding the people you talking trash about, do not say nothing.’”
What did he say that caused Wade to go berserk? We don’t know if there was any chirping on the court, but Arenas did admit to some trash talk before the game.
“They was talking about D-Wade coming to town and I was like ‘we’ll just guard him like they did in the Olympics’. We’re just guarding him like they did in the Olympics, he can’t shoot.”
Predictably, Wade went off on Arenas that game and made 16 points without a single jumper. Arenas said he called Wade up to apologize, but we’ll never know how Wade took it.
Needless to say, Arenas never made that mistake again, and it served as a warning for anyone else who wanted to get bold with D-Wade in the future.
Seriously though, when your own teammates are telling you to chill out, you know Wade was giving those guys a rough time.
