- Jaren Jackson Jr. frequently gets in foul trouble
- The big man suggested that foul trouble comes with playing aggressive defense
- Jackson Jr. said he’ll continue to “go get it” on the defensive side of the ball
Big man Jaren Jackson Jr. is one of the top-tier defensive players in the NBA, and there’s no doubt that he’s one of the best players on the Memphis Grizzlies. His rim protection is elite, and this summer, Jackson Jr. has been anchoring the defense for Team USA.
Even though Team USA’s defense has been stellar overall, one of the issues for the team is Jaren Jackson Jr. consistently getting in foul trouble. He led the league in fouls per game during the 2022-23 season at 3.6 and had 5 fouls in Team USA’s recent game against New Zealand. Part of that is due to Jackson Jr. consistently being aggressive on defense, which has led some people to say that he shouldn’t be as eager on that end of the floor. However, Jackson Jr. doesn’t plan to change his ways, with the big man telling Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports that foul trouble comes with being aggressive.
“Go get it, man,” he continued. “It comes with it. If I’m gonna be less aggressive, I’m gonna have less blocks, I’m gonna bring less rim protection, and I’ma have less fouls with all that. Pick one or the other. Which one do you want? Do you want me to be great or not?”
There are times when it is best for the rim protector to not pick up a foul so that they can stay in the game longer and continue to impact the game on the defensive end. Still, Jaren Jackson Jr.’s mentality is admirable, as he is committed to shining on that end of the floor.
This past season, Jaren Jackson Jr. averaged 18.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game for the Memphis Grizzlies. It is clear that he had a solid season, and hopefully, he shines for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup.
