Jason Kidd Claims Luka Doncic Doesn’t Need A Co-Star For The Mavericks To Contend: “It Could Be A Team Where There Is No Real Second Star, You’ve Just Got Guys Who Play Roles At A Very High Level.”

Luka Doncic is one of the brightest young talents in the league, and many have lauded his ability to pass and score at a high level. He is currently averaging 26.8 PPG, 8.9 RPG, and 9.1 APG while leading the Dallas Mavericks to the 5th seed in the Western Conference.

One of the biggest things that have prevented the Dallas Mavericks from winning a playoff series during Luka Doncic’s time on the franchise is the lack of a good co-star. Kristaps Porzingis had an All-Star appearance during his time on the New York Knicks but has not been selected to an All-Star team since.

Despite the lack of a co-star, coach Jason Kidd believes that the Dallas Mavericks can still be competitive. He claimed that the team could just have “guys who play roles at a very high level”.

Jason Kidd isn't certain Mavs need a bona fide Luka Doncic co-star to contend: "It could be a team where there is no real second star, you’ve just got guys who play roles at a very high level."

Like the 2011 title team?

"Yeah, you had one superstar and the rest were burgers.”

We will see if Jason Kidd’s hypothesis will end up being correct. Generally speaking, teams have at least two All-Star caliber players on the roster to be championship contenders, but there’s no doubt that some teams have won while having only one true star on the roster, surrounded by capable role players. Notable examples include the 2010-11 Dallas Mavericks and the 1993-94 Houston Rockets.

Hopefully, we see the Dallas Mavericks find postseason success in the future. There is no question that Luka Doncic is a superstar-caliber player that could lead a team on a deep run if he had the right pieces around him. The Mavericks have recently acquired Spencer Dinwiddie to try and help Luka Doncic, and perhaps he can be a solid contributor for the team in the future. We’ll see how well they do over the rest of the season, but the Mavericks are definitely a good spot.
