Dallas Mavericks big man Christian Wood has been a key piece for the franchise this season, and his offense and floor spacing have been a good fit next to Luka Doncic. There’s no doubt that he has been a productive contributor for the Mavericks, and is in line to potentially get a huge payday in free agency this summer.
Despite his talent and ability, Christian Wood’s playing time has decreased recently, and Wood is only averaging 20.3 MPG over his last 10 games for the Dallas Mavericks. Recently, Jason Kidd explained why Wood has had his minutes reduced, citing the depth that the Mavericks have.
“You look at just the depth that we have with all the bigs, we’re trying to get them in the game and see who has the hot hand, and right now, with Maxi [Kleber] back, that’s going to cut some of his minutes down, especially when we’re healthy. That’s just the way it is right now, and it can change as we go forward,” said Kidd.
I asked Mavericks coach Jason Kidd about Christian Wood's playing time continuing to be reduced in addition to not closing games since the trade deadline:

There is no doubt that Jason Kidd is picking which big men play based on whoever is performing the best in a given game. Hopefully, we see Wood show Kidd that he deserves more minutes over the next few weeks heading into the playoffs.
As of right now, Christian Wood is averaging 17.1 PPG, 7.6 RPG, and 1.6 APG for the Dallas Mavericks. He has had an efficient scoring season, shooting 52.2% from the field and 36.6% from the 3PT range.
The Dallas Mavericks Want To Keep Christian Wood
Even though he has his struggles on the defensive end, there’s no doubt that Christian Wood is a solid player. In fact, Mark Cuban previously stated that the Dallas Mavericks want to retain him in free agency.
“He gives us a dynamic that we haven’t had in a long time. He’s somebody who can post up, make a 3, attack, closeout, block a shot, and rebound. He’s really helped us. They [Wood and Doncic] understand each other better. When they play high pick-and-roll, C-Wood knows where to go and what to do. Luka can trust him, and they can play off of each other. The chemistry has been really fun to watch. We’d like to keep him.”
There is no doubt that Christian Wood has been a solid fit offensively for the Dallas Mavericks. Wood has spoken highly of Luka Doncic in the past as well, and it is clear that the franchise must do whatever it takes to retain him.
Hopefully, we see Christian Wood help the Dallas Mavericks make a deep playoff run. If he does well in the postseason that could increase his payday in free agency, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
