Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown experienced his first career ejection during a game against the New York Knicks, leaving him frustrated and critical of the officiating. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter when Brown received a technical foul for disputing a call and was subsequently ejected after earning a second technical while on the bench.

“I always thought my first career ejection would be something a little more exciting. Maybe a tussle or something, guys get folded up, go to the ground. Not some overemotional ref who had a bad day.”

“What I’m most upset about is that I should’ve gotten my fuc**** money’s worth. On the second one, I’m on the bench. I’m talking from the sideline and he can’t even hear anything that I am saying.”

“So he calls a tech from across the court and that’s for sure have to do with somebody having their emotions too involved in whatever else is going on and exercising their power with technical fouls.”

Expressing his discontent, Brown told reporters that he expected his first career ejection to be more exciting, perhaps involving physical altercations on the court, rather than being triggered by what he termed an “overemotional ref who had a bad day.” Brown emphasized that he wished he had “gotten his money’s worth” from the ejection.

The first technical foul was issued after Brown complained about a foul call while defending Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla revealed that Brown allegedly said, “don’t call that weak-ass s—,” leading to the initial tech. Mazzulla expressed confusion, noting that he had witnessed more disrespectful behavior from players without ejections in his five years in the NBA.

Brown’s frustrations escalated when he received a second technical, which he believes was unwarranted. According to Brown, the ref on the other side of the court, who appeared emotionally involved, issued the second tech, indicating an abuse of power to eject a player from the game. Brown considered the decision to be unfair.

Despite the ejection, the Celtics managed to secure a 133-123 victory over the Knicks, maintaining their unbeaten record at home (10-0). Derrick White led the team with a 30-point effort, while Jayson Tatum and Kristaps Porzingis contributed 25 and 21 points, respectively.

The Celtics, with a 16-5 record, lead both the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference. Brown is expected to return to action when the Celtics face the Cleveland Cavaliers at TD Garden on December 12.

Worrying Trend Continues Across The NBA

The current NBA season has witnessed a concerning trend with several stars and superstars facing ejections, impacting the viewing experience for fans. Notable players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Chris Paul, Nikola Jokic, Jayson Tatum, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and the latest addition, Jaylen Brown, have all found themselves ejected from games. However, the legitimacy of these ejections has been questioned, with many arguing that, with the exception of Draymond Green’s ejection for a chokehold on Rudy Gobert, the rest were undeserved.

The increasing frequency of ejections raises alarms about the referees’ decision-making and the potential impact on the game’s overall entertainment value. Fans tune in to witness the best players in the world showcase their skills, not to witness them prematurely exiting the court due to questionable officiating.

The demand for referees to exercise restraint and better judgment is becoming more apparent. While maintaining control of the game is crucial, the referees must distinguish between legitimate reasons for ejections, such as dangerous plays or altercations, and situations where players express frustration or disagreement with calls. Overly strict enforcement of technical fouls and ejections not only affects the outcome of games but also hampers the quality of the competition.

As the league continues to grapple with this worrying trend, it is essential for the NBA to address the issue and find a balance that ensures fair officiating without diminishing the presence of star players on the court. The focus should be on allowing the athletes to display their talents, keeping the fans engaged, and maintaining the integrity of the game, rather than overshadowing it with controversial ejections.
