Jeanie Buss recently addressed the Los Angeles Lakers’ decision to hire JJ Redick as their new head coach, explaining that the move was driven by Redick’s vision and a desire to think differently about the team’s future. In an interview on Los Angeles-based AM 570 radio, Buss elaborated on the reasons behind Redick’s hiring.

“We wanted to kind of think a different way. Really, he’s got a vision. I’m not comfortable talking about the basketball stuff, but we were looking for a candidate that would bring something different and really invest in developing young players. JJ is the right person for us.”

“Again, I just want to work to really speak for itself, so I don’t want to hype it and say it’s gonna be a home run. We have to give him time to establish what he wants to establish. I’m really impressed with his staff. Right now, it’s not mandatory for the players to come in and practice but players are coming in and working out.”

“The coaching staff with Nate McMillan and Scotty Brooks, there’s a lot of experience that will be there for him to make that adjustment to being a head coach. Certainly a 12-year career in the league, he’s got a lot of experience. He knows what this league is about and I think he’ll be a great leader.”

She emphasized that the Lakers were looking for a candidate who could bring something new to the table, particularly in the area of player development. The decision to bring in Redick, a former NBA player with no prior coaching experience, has been met with mixed reactions. Some fans and analysts praise the move as a bold step toward innovation, while others question the wisdom of hiring someone with such limited coaching credentials.

JJ Redick, who enjoyed a successful 12-year career in the NBA as a sharpshooting guard, is known for his basketball IQ and analytical approach to the game. Buss expressed confidence in Redick’s ability to lead the team, particularly with the support of an experienced coaching staff that includes veterans like Nate McMillan and Scotty Brooks.

Redick’s vision for the Lakers includes a focus on modernizing the team’s approach, particularly in areas like offensive strategy and player development. The Lakers, historically known for their star-driven success, are looking to build a more sustainable model that emphasizes developing young talent. Buss’s comments suggest that the organization is committed to giving Redick the time and resources he needs to implement his vision.

While the decision to hire Redick is undoubtedly a gamble, Jeanie Buss and the Los Angeles Lakers are hopeful that it will pay off by setting the team on a new path that balances immediate success with long-term growth. Whether Redick’s vision will translate into on-court success remains to be seen, but the Lakers are clearly betting on a fresh approach to lead them into the future.
