Jimmy Butler just had one of the greatest individual performances in playoff history, as he scored 56 points to beat the first-seeded Milwaukee Bucks to take a shocking 3-1 series lead.

Butler was serenaded by MVP chants by the hometown fans in Miami after his history-making night. The Heat star didn’t want to be called the MVP, openly saying the award should go to his friend, Joel Embiid.

“I don’t know about MVP. I think that’s Joel (Embiid), if I’m being brutally honest.”

Butler and Embiid were teammates during Butler’s sole season with Philly in 2018-19. That season ended with the devastating Kawhi Leonard buzzer-beater that eliminated the 76ers in 2019. Butler’s Heat eliminated Embiid’s 76ers from the playoffs last season. They can’t meet in the playoffs this year until both teams reach the conference finals.

Jimmy Butler Doesn’t Care About Awards

Jimmy Butler wasn’t named an All-Star this season, nor is he topped to make an All-NBA team. Regardless of Butler slowly ramping up through the season, he has proven that he will be one of the best players in the NBA when it’s playoff time regularly. We’ve seen this too many times since he joined the Heat, with the only exception being in 2021 when he struggled in a sweep loss to the Bucks.

Nobody thought Butler should be in the running for MVP, so it is easy for him to endorse one of his close friends for the award. Embiid definitely deserves it, as do other candidates. Jimmy couldn’t care less, as he is going to celebrate his incredible accomplishment before ensuring they can finish the job in Game 5.
