JJ Redick has been making headlines recently with rumors linking him to the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching vacancy. Despite the buzz, during an appearance on the “GoJo and Golic Show,” Redick was asked about the rumors, but he chose to keep his response vague, emphasizing his current commitment to covering the Finals.

“I would say this. My focus right now is on calling the NBA Finals. I am so fortunate that I’m in this position and I get to call these Finals with Doris and Mike. And I mentioned the State Farm thing that I just did on YouTube.”

“My day-to-day right now is consumed with calling games, the 19 different podcasts I feel like I have, my obligations to all of our partners. So my focus is on the NBA Finals. I will say that. In terms of Shams, that will be addressed once the season is over. So I’ll just say that.”

When asked about the speculation, Redick was clear that his primary focus is currently on his role as an ESPN analyst for the NBA Finals. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the commentary team for such a significant event alongside Doris Burke and Mike Breen.

Redick highlighted his packed schedule, which includes calling games, managing multiple podcasts, and fulfilling various commitments to his business partners. He emphasized that his immediate attention is on these responsibilities and the ongoing NBA Finals, rather than on the coaching rumors.

Reports from The Athletic’s Shams Charania indicate that Redick has emerged as the front-runner for the Lakers’ head coaching position, labeling him as their leading choice at this stage. He acknowledged the report but deferred any discussion or decisions about his future until after the NBA Finals are concluded.

The series between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks could stretch until June 23, depending on how many games it takes to determine a winner. This timeline complicates the Lakers’ ability to make a timely announcement.

Redick’s current situation puts him in a challenging position. As an analyst for the NBA Finals, he has to maintain his professional focus while being a central figure in one of the biggest ongoing stories in the league. He must balance his media duties with any preliminary groundwork for a potential coaching role with the Lakers.

The Lakers are in a state of limbo, waiting for the Finals to conclude before making any official moves. Meanwhile, Redick has to navigate the increasing speculation without drawing too much attention away from the NBA’s premier event. His comments on the show suggest he is not closing any doors but remains cautious about making any definitive statements until the Finals are over.

As Redick continues to call the Finals, the Lakers organization and fans are left in anticipation. The potential for him to transition from the broadcast booth to the sidelines of one of the NBA’s most storied franchises adds an extra layer of intrigue to his media appearances.

If he does become the Lakers’ head coach, it will mark a significant shift in his career from player and broadcaster to leading one of the league’s marquee teams.
