John Wall is mostly in the news these days for getting bought out of the final year of his massive contract. Wall got everything but $6.5 million of the salary he was supposed to earn next season, still clearing $40 million even though he will no longer be on the roster for the Houston Rockets.
Though many have described Wall as one of the worst contracts in the league, people forget that he was an All-Star and one of the best point guards in the league before his injury. And considering the situation with his contract as well as the fact that he is reportedly aiming to join the Los Angeles Clippers after being bought out, his old comments about Reggie Jackson’s contract with Detroit in 2015 have resurfaced.
“People talk about me getting $80 million, now you got people getting $85 million that haven’t made the All-Star (Game) or anything like that,” Wall said to Comcast SportsNet Washington. “I guess they came in at the right time. That new CBA kicked in and they’re good now. Reggie Jackson gets five years, $80 million. I’m getting the same as Reggie Jackson.”
Wall will be earning a ridiculous amount of money even next season, and he has already made a huge sum despite only playing 40 games in the last three seasons. The fact that Reggie Jackson could now be his teammate is likely what has brought attention to these comments as well.
Players’ contracts in the modern NBA have been a big discussion recently, and Wall is not one to be exempt from that. As the league continues to grow, the salary cap is only expected to go higher, which is something that will see the size of contracts soar even more than the 20s go on. While Wall may not see that kind of money again himself, he will likely be happy to be on the court and contribute once more.
