Victor Wembanyama‘s first game in a San Antonio Spurs jersey did not go the way he had hoped. Wembanyama seemed to struggle with the pace of the game, as he only ended up scoring 9 points, and going 2 for 13 from the field. Wemby didn’t have an ideal debut, but one NBA legend gave him some solid advice.

After the game, Victor Wembanyama was seen speaking to recently retired NBA legend Carmelo Anthony. Anthony could be heard telling Wembanyama to try and soak in the experience, enjoy the environment of Las Vegas, and just focus on playing the sport he loves.

“Just hoop and enjoy Vegas.”

Carmelo Anthony knows what it is like to enter the NBA with high expectations. Anthony was one of three players from the 2003 NBA Draft class that were expected to become stars in the league, alongside LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Melo would end up becoming one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history.

Will Wembanyama Turn Things Around?

Wembanyama didn’t make the first impression fans expected him to make in his NBA Summer League debut. In fact, he had several embarrassing moments, including getting his ankles broken and posterized. Wembanyama also seemed to lose his confidence, missing shots that he has shown he can easily make in the past.

However, fans did react hyperbolically after the game, with some even calling him the biggest bust in recent history. Judging Wembanyama after one, admittedly poor performance would be a bad idea, as he is still adjusting to playing in a new environment.

Wembanyama will be hoping to turn things around, noting that he didn’t know what was going on during his first game. With the shock of the new NBA environment out of the way, perhaps Wemby can use the negative experience to adjust his strategy into the rest of the tournament and then the regular season.
