• Jusuf Nurkic has spoken out in opposition to gun use in the USA
• He openly admitted he doesn’t understand why so many Americans own guns
• Nurkic was traded to the Phoenix Suns ahead of the 2023/24 season
Jusuf Nurkic has been living in the United States ever since he joined the NBA in 2014. Almost ten years into his NBA career, Nurkic has questioned why citizens in the USA are after protecting their right to bear arms. He thinks civilians shouldn’t own guns so he can feel safe about his children at school.
“I still don’t know why everybody has so many guns. I still don’t understand it to this day because I feel the kids should be safer in our schools. Even if you see fake guns, whatever comes up with social media and kids having them at schools, I think it’s a bad thing. Sometimes, you can’t control certain things with all the social media platforms we have.”

Nurkic has raised some valid questions, but the gun debate is a very delicate one. There are arguments on both sides of the argument, but it’s clear that Nurkic stands on the side of guns not being in control of civilians.
Jusuf Nurkic Dreams Of A World With No Guns
Nurkic’s commentary on gun use didn’t end with just the abundant use of them in the USA. He made a very emotional comment about the use of guns in general, wishing the world could be rid of them so we wouldn’t have as many violent instances of war and killings anymore.
“A better world going forward will definitely be one without guns because all these wars around the world are not good for anyone, especially the people who are going through that and losing their lives for no reason. War doesn’t bring anything, just sadness and heartbreaking things. I feel like for the kids going forward in America or on the whole earth, it has got to be a better place to live, you know, with more positive things.”
Nurkic is clearly unafraid of speaking his mind, knowing how sensitive this issue is. If you stand for nothing, you fall for anything, so it’s good to see Nurkic have such a strong stance on this matter. Everyone can agree that gun use is bad, but as Nurkic is realizing, there are nuances to this conversation which include people’s right to protect themselves, Some prefer to do it with a gun, and feel strongly about it.
Problematic Instances Of Gun Use In The NBA
The NBA isn’t unfamiliar with its players being linked to gun use in one way or the other. The latest incident came with Ja Morant, who was hit with two suspensions in a matter of months over flaunting a gun. The NBA’s second suspension for 25 games was considered harsh by many, as Morant is never seen firing a gun or threatening anyone, but it was a way for the NBA to clearly show where they stand with their players flashing guns.
One of the most famous instances of guns becoming a talking point in the NBA was when Washington Wizards teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton were willing to shoot each other after Arenas made fun of Crittenton while trying to recoup a gambling debt.
Both players showed up to the locker room with guns and aimed at each other, prompting the NBA to strike down severe sentences on both players. They were suspended for the entire season and we’ve never seen anything like that happen again.
