Kai Jones has gone from being a player entering his sophomore season on the Charlotte Hornets to one of the biggest centers of drama this summer. The Hornets big man suddenly requested a trade away from the franchise, using social media to do the same.

“I have officially requested to be traded from the Charlotte Hornets. #GOATLIFE”

Jones was drafted 19th overall by the Hornets in 2021. While he has a lot of potential, his behavior this summer has to concern not only the Hornets but other teams in the NBA as well. Kai has had troubling instances on social media where he has mocked his teammates and had fans wondering if he was abusing drugs.

Kai averaged 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds last season. The Hornets will not miss his production on the court, but the situation with Jones shows how the franchise has bottled another first-round pick.

Given the franchise has needed a star big man for years, drafting someone other than Jones could have yielded a better result than what they’ve gotten from Kai so far.

Jones’ post on X/Twitter where he directly requested a trade was not enough for the young prospect. He has been calling himself the GOAT extensively on X/Twitter, and even made a case for why he may be better than LeBron James based on some converted advanced stats that showed he could’ve averaged 15 points per game.

“That’s my whole point only a few people catch him in all three categories even in the g so my point is that once I bring that same mentality to every day but be even neater why would I not MVP DPOY I’m not just gassing it you know? But, it’s one day, one shot at a time.”

Self-belief is great, but when it borders on delusion, it can be a problem. The Hornets have made a mess of building out a competitive roster once again. It doesn’t look like any team in the NBA is lining up to acquire Jones in a trade, so the Hornets could possibly just release him and leave this troubling element of their summer behind as they look to compete for a play-in spot.

Jones has even more posts on social media demanding a bigger role and singing his own praises, even at the expense of his teammates at times.

Kai Jones Was Suspended By The Hornets

Jones’ trade request comes in the wake of the Hornets franchise already planning for a future without him. His social media activity led to the team forcefully suspending the big man. He hasn’t been a part of training camp, and his recent trade request could indicate his time with the franchise coming to an end.

“The Charlotte Hornets will have 2021 first-round pick Kai Jones away from the team indefinitely, and there’s no timetable for his return. Jones will miss training camp due to personal reasons, and the team remains in constant communication with him.” With no further details on the situation, it’s impossible to draw a definitive conclusion on what happened or how things will play out.

There could be a bright future for Jones in the NBA, given his youth and potential. But it looks like Kai will struggle to get a fair opportunity in the league after his actions have fully alienated the Hornets organization.
