Kawhi Leonard Once Panicked After Losing His Free Wingstop Coupons Despite Earning $16 Million In 2016

Kawhi Leonard has always been a unique superstar, quieter and generally different in demeanor from most of the players at his level in the NBA. During the 2015-16 season, Leonard truly exploded as a superstar on the San Antonio Spurs, after signing a new $90 million contract.

And while the basketball aspect of it would go on to get complicated, Kawhi Leonard didn’t act like someone worth millions off the court. A profile of him by SI in 2016 revealed a funny story about the time he lost his coupons from Wingstop.

“He is happy to sponsor Wingstop, which sends him coupons for free wings, so he can feed his Mango Habanero addiction,” the profile said. “This winter, after his $94 million contract kicked in, he panicked when he lost his coupons. Wingstop generously replenished his supply.”

It is hilarious to imagine Leonard, who was scheduled to make $16 million that year, with nearly $80 million more to come at least, would panic so much about coupons for free wings. But it goes to show how grounded he has always been off the court that these are the things he was worrying about.

Kawhi Leonard is far from the only NBA player to be cautious with his money, LeBron James is quite famous for it at this point in his career. These are players that have seen hard times growing up, so it makes sense that despite having amassed generational wealth, they have stories like this about them.

Kawhi Leonard Is Due To Sign Another Massive Contract Soon Having Already Earned Over $230 Million In His Career

Kawhi Leonard’s career earnings have already surpassed $230 million, and he is owed another $45 million next season. He has a player option for $48 million the season after that, but the Clippers might want to extend him before then. Team President Lawrence Frank has already spoken about potential extensions for him and Paul George.

“Our process is this, we’ll sit down,” Frank said. “Those guys are great players, great partners, and we want to keep them as Clippers for a long time. So we’ll look forward to those conversations.”

Leonard can expect to potentially earn another $200 million on what will be his last big NBA deal. His injuries and lack of availability will be concerns, but his quality will see him get paid. Even after earning as much as he will have by the time he retires though, no one would be surprised if he’s still passionate about his Wingstop coupons.
