Charles Oakley was one of the most legendary enforcers in the NBA, he had a tough guy image that he has maintained even in retirement. Oakley wasn’t one to humor anyone’s nonsense, not even if they were the biggest NBA stars.
Dennis Rodman became an NBA legend for his achievements with the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls. But his behavior off the court was as erratic as his game was incredible. And one time, Rodman’s wild acts landed him on Oakley’s bad side, which led to an intense story.
We did an appearance together that afternoon,” Oakley recounted to GQ in 2022. “He (Dennis Rodman) was cool before that, but we left the restaurant and he asked, “What you doing tonight?” And I said, “I’m going to my steakhouse. About 7, 7:30.” I do a couple of things. I stop by Prime 112. I get a call from my manager. He said, “Oak, guess what’s happening?” I said, “What?” He said, “Dennis is walking around eating off people’s plates.” I said, “I’ll be right over.”
I walked over there, I look through the window and I’m looking at him, doing this. Wow, my agent was right. I made a beeline for him. I did him like I did Charles Barkley, I didn’t smack the guy. I just grabbed him by his shirt and asked him, “What the heck is you doing?” He said, “I’m just having a good time.” I said, “You don’t have a good time like this in my type of establishment.” I grabbed him, dragged him to the door and threw him out. I said, “Don’t you never come around me again.”
There were a lot of people that put up with Dennis Rodman doing whatever he pleased, but Charles Oakley was not one of them. Eating off of other people’s plates is a bit crazy, and Oakley wasn’t having any of that. His list of feuds with other NBA stars from that era is truly endless.
Charles Oakley Has Physically Fought Various NBA Players
Charles Oakley was the tough guy on the court when he played, but that didn’t stop when he wasn’t playing. He once punched Jeff McInnis, in his words, for disrespecting him. That’s not the only time he did that either, John Salley revealed that Oakley once punched him for saying Kobe Bryant was better than Michael Jordan.
There are no players left in the NBA that are as old-school as Charles Oakley was. He was never a big star in the league, but his reputation preceded him as someone that demanded respect and wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty if he didn’t get it.
