Kevin Durant Blasts The MVP Race: “I Feel The Criteria Changes Every Day.”

2 Min Read

The NBA MVP race is absolutely wide open this season, with no clear favorite and number of candidates making a strong case.

Between Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, James Harden, and even Giannis Antetokounmpo, many fantastic names have popped up in the conversation this year.

But for Nets superstar Kevin Durant, the MVP isn’t necessarily something he holds in high regard. Speaking on “The Jump,” he expressed his displeasure in the constantly changing criteria of the accolade.

Remember, Durant himself is an MVP winner, having hoisted the trophy with the Thunder back in 2014, and it clearly meant something to him back then. What has changed?

Well, for one, there is some truth to the idea that the criteria for winning the award is a bit inconsistent year after year. Back when Russell Westbrook was named MVP, it was for his amazing statistical performance, as the guard had averaged the first triple-double season since Oscar Roberston. The Thunder, however, were only the sixth seed in the West.

Now, it very much seems like the best player on the best team is the automatic favorite to win.

Injuries have certainly complicated matters in 2021, but it’s hard not to feel confused at times about which aspects matter the most in deciding an MVP.

Perhaps, sometime soon, the NBA can set the record straight once and for all.
