Kevin Durant Gives Honest Answer On Finishing His Career With The Phoenix Suns

Kevin Durant is loving life as a Phoenix Sun but admits things could change in the future.

The Phoenix Suns are the fourth franchise that Kevin Durant has played for, after the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, and Brooklyn Nets, but he isn’t sure they will be the last one. During an interview with Malika Andrews, Durant was asked if he would want to finish his career with the Suns.

“I mean, I’ve been on so many teams now and I said this before, right now in this moment today without thinking about the next minute, yeah,” Durant said. “But that’s just saying right now and I can’t really predict what may happen, but I love playing in Phoenix, I love the fan base, the city.”

Durant also wants to be in the Suns’ Ring of Honor.

“I’ve grown to understand what our mission is, being in the valley, and how deep these people care about their team,” Durant added. “So, I started to understand the history of the Suns and I’m glad to be a part of it. I want to go up in that Ring of Honor one day, so however long that takes.”

(starts at 3:11 mark):

Amar’e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion were the latest additions to the Suns’ Ring of Honor in 2023, and Durant would be hoping to accomplish what they couldn’t, which is to win a championship in Phoenix. With Durant and Devin Booker leading the way, the Suns made it to the Western Conference Semifinals last season, where they lost in six games to the Denver Nuggets, the eventual champions.

The addition of Bradley Beal this past offseason made it clear the Suns were going all-in for a title, but this 2023-24 season has been a bit of a mixed bag. We have seen great stretches of basketball but also some horrendous fourth-quarter meltdowns. The injury bug has also struck, and as a result, Phoenix is currently seventh in the Western Conference with a 33-23 record.

For his part, Durant is in the midst of another great season, as he is averaging 28.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 0.9 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game. Despite how the season has perhaps not gone as well as he would have hoped, the 14-time All-Star is happy as of now. A lot can change in a year or two, though, and if things go south at some point, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Durant asks out.

Kevin Durant Says He Could Play Into His 40s

Durant is now 35 years old, and while one might think the end is near, he is open to playing for a lot longer. During this interview, he said he could be effective on the court in his 40s. (starts at 3:01 mark in the above video)

“Yeah, I can catch and shoot a little bit, play a little defense, be a 3-and-D sixth man, maybe, when I’m in my 40s,” Durant said.

Durant’s shooting prowess could help him be effective at that age, but the biggest question mark with him is his health. He hasn’t played 60 games in a season after he tore his Achilles in 2019. The former MVP might do it this season, though, as he has played 49 games already.

Even if he does end up playing over 70 games this season, I wouldn’t be too optimistic about Durant’s body holding up when he is in his 40s. I would love to be proven wrong, though.

His passion for the sport was ignited after witnessing the high-octane offense of the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns. Among the Suns, Shawn Marion stood out to Gautam as an all-time underrated NBA player. Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely. He admired Marion’s finishing ability at the rim and his shooting, despite an unconventional jump shot, believing that Marion’s skill set would have been even more appreciated in today’s NBA.This transformative experience not only deepened his love for basketball but also shaped his approach to sports writing, enabling him to connect with readers through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis.
