Kevin Durant Reveals Why He Changed From Number 35 to No. 7: “All My Favorite Superstars Rocked 2 Numbers”

2 Min Read

Besides joining a new team, last year Kevin Durant surprised everybody when he revealed he was going to wear a new number with the Brooklyn Nets. KD picked No. 7 as his new number “to honor someone very near and dear” to him.

“35 took me and my family from Seat Pleasant, MD and showed us the world,” Durant wrote last year. “But as I start this next chapter in my basketball life, the number I’ll be wearing on my back is the number 7 next time you see me on the floor. One time Brooklyn.”

More recently, he spoke with The Players Tribune about his decision to rock a different number. KD explained he wanted to emulate some of his favorite players, who wore two different numbers during his career. He mentioned LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Carmelo Anthony.

“Wanted to try something new for this phase of my career plus ALL my favorite superstars rocked 2 numbers….kobe, mike, bron… Oh yea I can’t forget Melo,” Durant explained.

We’re yet to see Durant wearing his new uniform and his new number with the Nets. The expectations for that moment will be huge since KD will start a new chapter in his career, trying to prove he can win a title without the help of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

The Nets have an interesting project with Durant, Kyrie Irving and their new head coach Steve Nash.
