Ben Simmons was shut down for the season by the Brooklyn Nets last week after another troubled season in the NBA for the Australian star.

Former champion and league MVP Kevin Garnett spoke about Simmons’ season and clearly showed he expects more from the injury-riddled star.

“I don’t like doing this, but I am looking at a guy like Ben Simmons, man. Ben Simmons, you listen to me, I want you to go back and find your roots. Go back and find out why you love the game, bro. Straight up. To shut him down and he has back issues and go through this whole f***ing song and dance. There’s n***as like Melo, Cousins, Dwight Howard, there’s n***as at home that could be in this position bro. If your heart ain’t in it, it is what it is. I hate to say this man. He’s got another run in him but it’s going to have to be Ben Simmons. Not his mom, not none of this collective around him, it’s going to be him. I want to see dude get back to killing, man.”

If Simmons can’t shake the nagging injuries he’s faced over the years, he’s likely never going to feel confident enough in his body to be the high-flying point forward he was during his All-NBA seasons. Simmons predicting most of his game on his physical tools has ultimately backfired, as his body has worn him down to the point he may be an untradeable asset on a rookie max contract.

Can Ben Simmons Find Himself Again?

The one positive thing for Simmons is that the Nets are currently in a rebuilding mode and will have opportunities for him to thrive. The team clearly wants some return on the James Harden trade that brought Simmons to the Nets and developing Ben will be the best way for them to recoup more assets.

Simmons played 42 games and averaged 6.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists this season, a massively disappointing campaign for the player many expected may be a factor in deciding whether the Nets will be NBA Champions. Now the team is wildly different, but Simmons is still trying to find his place in it for the future.
