The Golden State Warriors are expected to be contenders this season, and a large reason for that is due to the presence of Klay Thompson. Though the shooting guard is no longer the All-Star-level player he once was, he is still a quality 3PT shooter who can be impactful on a championship team. Despite his ability, Thompson enters the season with his Warriors future uncertain, as he is on the last year of his deal and has not yet signed a contract extension.

Recently, Thompson gave his take on his contract situation with the Warriors, noting that he is focused on the season and not concerned about the extension currently.

“I’m focused on the daily dedication it takes to do this job,” Thompson said. “I’m not really worried about an extension right now. That will all play itself out… I just don’t want to think about it. I don’t like thinking about it. Yeah, I don’t like thinking about it.”

It will be interesting to see how the situation with Thompson’s extension develops. It is clear that the team wants him to play out the season and assess his performance to ensure that they do not overpay him. However, this is also a chance for Thompson to show that he can still be a top-tier shooting guard and prove that he deserves a new max contract.

Over the course of the 2022-23 regular season, Thompson averaged 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, while shooting 41.2% from 3PT range. He is still one of the best 3PT shooters in the game, and can certainly have a huge impact in the right role.

Klay Thompson Is Still Striving To Be Great

Even though he has dealt with a lot of adversity due to injuries, Thompson is clearly still good enough to be the secondary scorer on the Warriors. He could potentially be even better this season after another year removed from his injuries, and previously, Thompson claimed that he wants to remind people he is capable of greatness.

“No championship hangover this summer. I was very driven and I worked extremely hard. I know I don’t have 10 more years to do this so I have to enjoy every single day. I feel great, this is the best I have physically felt in years. I am excited to show the world I am still capable of greatness.”

On certain nights, it definitely seems as though the old Thompson is back. The key for him this season will be consistency: the team needs him to provide steady offense next to Stephen Curry, and we’ll see just how good Thompson is this season.

Klay Thompson Could Still Retire As A Warriors Player

Even though he is in the last year of his contract, many people expect Thompson and the Warriors to figure out some way to continue their partnership. It is hard to envision Thompson in another team’s jersey, given all that he’s done for the franchise.

Of course, a deal for the Warriors will have to come at the right price. The team already has limited flexibility when it comes to the salary cap, especially under the new CBA.

Hopefully, though, we do see Thompson stay with the Warriors for the rest of his career. He should get the opportunity to retire as a Warrior, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
