2010 wasn’t the best year for LeBron James and you could bad things were about to be when he made some statements that drew a lot of attention. At the time, Bron was still with the Cleveland Cavaliers, trying to take the team to have a successful playoff run and finally win that elusive title.
Moreover, LeBron found himself fighting for the scoring title, but that didn’t have much importance to him. Talking with Brian Windhorst, then Cavaliers beat writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, James revealed that he could win the award every year if he wanted to, raising a lot of eyebrows around the league. He was competing with Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the competition was very close (29.8 to 29.7 ppg in favor of Bron).
“If it happens, it happens,” said James of a second consecutive scoring title. “It is not important to me at all.”
“Our team is trying to clinch [home court advantage] for the whole playoffs,” he said, “and [that] is more important.”
Then, he made the statement that didn’t please a lot of people.
“If I really wanted to, if I really wanted to win the scoring title, I could win it every single year,” he said. “Every single year, I could really do it. But it doesn’t matter to me.”
It’s fair to say, at the time, the league had several great scorers. Players like Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony and Durant himself showed a great talent to make baskets, but Bron was confident he could beat all of them and win the scoring title every single season.
He’s been known as a pass-first guy, but LeBron can score, too. It would’ve been interested to see how he would’ve fared if he focus mostly on scoring rather than facilitating the game for his teammates. LeBron has won only one scoring title, while Durant has collected four, Kobe won two and Michael Jordan earned 10 scoring championships.
