LeBron James is used to making history, although generally, he does that on the basketball court. Even after the Los Angeles Lakers‘ season ended though, James has found himself becoming a part of another historic sporting moment.

One of the oldest and most prestigious motorsport races in the world is the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is the world’s oldest endurance racing event and they just celebrated 100 years of the race. And LeBron James was the man to start the action off, taking social media by storm.

LeBron James is one of the most popular and respected athletes in the entire world, so it’s no surprise that he was chosen for an honor like this. Motorsport has been gaining popularity rapidly in recent years and their pull reaching the point that James himself is present to start the race off is another good sign for the sport.

LeBron James even took the struggle to learn some French so that he could speak ahead of the race. It was a nice gesture from LeBron considering that he was in a foreign country and it surely meant as lot to the fans that were present. The King seems to be enjoying some time off in Europe, much deserved after a season in which he broke the all-time scoring record.

LeBron James And The Lakers Had A Mixed Season

The Los Angeles Lakers started the season 2-10 and it looked like they wouldn’t have a very enjoyable season. However, all that changed when they made some big moves at the trade deadline which led to a run to the Western Conference Finals. The season ultimately ended in a sweep and a disappointment but it certainly was entertaining from the start to the finish.

LeBron James had a mixed season himself, he averaged 28.9 points per game and earned another All-Star nod. However, as he concluded at the end of the season, he no longer plays for anything other than the championship. James seemingly considered retirement after the end of the year, but will surely return next season for the Los Angeles Lakers once again.

In the meanwhile, there could be worse ways to spend time off than vacationing in France. And if gets to soak in some fun motorsport while he’s at it, that will surely be another experience in itself. This is another great example of how global both basketball and the NBA are.
