In LeBron James’ perfect world, Tyronn Lue would be his head coach and Kyrie Irving would be his point guard, ensuring a harmonious Lakers team ready for championship contention. This ideal scenario was highlighted by Shams Charania of The Athletic during a recent episode of “Up & Adams,” as the Lakers continue their search for a new head coach following the departure of Darvin Ham.

“Well, in 2019, LeBron James really wanted Ty Lue to be the head coach. The Lakers had negotiations with him, did not hire him. That’s one thing he wanted, did not happen.”

“The last couple of years, Kyrie Irving, they made two attempts at Kyrie Irving. LeBron James wanted Kyrie Irving as his point guard. That did not happen. So there’s been things that, obviously, LeBron James has wanted.”

“In a perfect ideal world, Ty Lue would be his head coach and Kyrie Irving would be his point guard.”

James has a storied history with both Lue and Irving, having won the 2016 NBA championship with them during their time with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The trio’s chemistry was instrumental in overcoming a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors, marking one of the greatest comebacks in NBA history.

Irving’s departure from the Cavaliers in 2017 and Lue’s subsequent exit have left a void that James believes could be filled once again in Los Angeles.

Despite James’ preferences, the Lakers have struggled to align with his vision. In 2019, negotiations with Lue fell through, leading to Frank Vogel’s appointment as head coach.

While Vogel did secure a championship in the 2020 NBA bubble, subsequent seasons have been less successful, with the team failing to make deep playoff runs. Ham’s tenure has been marked by questionable in-game adjustments and a lack of effective timeouts, culminating in early playoff exits.

The pursuit of Irving has also been fraught with challenges. The Lakers made two attempts to acquire him in recent years, but Irving chose to stay with the Dallas Mavericks, signing a three-year, $120 million contract last offseason. Irving’s decision was influenced by his comfort in Dallas and his partnership with Luka Doncic, making a move to Los Angeles less likely.

James’ reluctance to directly influence the coaching hire reflects his understanding of the potential backlash if the chosen candidate fails to deliver results. He prefers the front office to take responsibility, avoiding any blame for unsuccessful decisions. This strategic detachment underscores the complexity of managing superstar expectations while striving for team success.

As James nears the twilight of his illustrious career, the Lakers face mounting pressure to make moves that will keep him satisfied and competitive. Whether this includes drafting his son Bronny or finding alternative ways to strengthen the roster, the goal remains clear: to maximize James’ remaining years and contend for another championship. The Lakers’ ability to navigate these dynamics will be crucial in determining their future success.

LeBron James Is Playing It Safe And Smart

LeBron James is demonstrating a strategic and calculated approach as the Lakers gear up for the upcoming season, choosing to play it safe and smart in various aspects of team management.

Reports swirling around suggest that James is inclined towards signing an extension with the Lakers, indicating his commitment to the franchise and his desire for continuity. Furthermore, rumors speculate that if Bronny, his son, is available in the draft, the Lakers may opt to select him, a move aimed at keeping LeBron content and invested in the team’s future.

Amidst the Lakers’ coaching search frenzy, James has taken a hands-off approach, indicating his preference to distance himself from the decision-making process. This strategic move allows him to maintain a level of detachment, ensuring that the Lakers can make their choice without undue influence.

By letting the Lakers handle the coaching search, James can focus on his game and assess the team’s direction without distractions.

LeBron’s timing in this regard is impeccable. With the Lakers expected to hire a coach before James needs to decide on his player option, and the draft concluding before his option date, he can assess the team’s trajectory with ample information at his disposal. This allows him to make informed decisions about his future with the Lakers, including potential contract extensions or exploring other options.

Maintaining flexibility is key for James, as evidenced by his recent appearance in Cleveland during the Cavaliers-Celtics series. The reception he received and the speculation surrounding his motives highlight the intrigue surrounding his next move. By keeping his options open and staying abreast of developments within the league, James positions himself to make the best decision for his career.

In essence, LeBron James’ cautious and calculated approach reflects his savvy understanding of the NBA landscape. By playing it safe and smart, he ensures that his future aligns with his aspirations while keeping the Lakers’ long-term success in mind.
