Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players to ever step onto the court regardless of gender. Her career speaks for itself, and it was sad to see Williams play the final competitive tennis match of her career in her US Open loss to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic. Many were hoping for Williams to have an underdog journey to winning the event, but her journey is over.

With Williams now heading into retirement, the entire sports fraternity came together to honor one of the greatest athletes of this generation. Williams is a trailblazer for both Black and female athletes in sports like tennis, as she climbed up the ranks of the sport and is leaving it with 4 Olympic Gold medals, 23 Majors, 6 US Open titles, and a total of 73 career titles.

Multiple top athletes have come out and shared tweets in support of Serena. This includes legendary golfer Tiger Woods and various NBA stars like LeBron James, Darius Garland, Ja Morant, Chris Paul, and many more.

Serena Williams Walks Away From Tennis As One Of The Undisputed Greats

Serena Williams started her tennis playing career in 1995 when she turned professional. Her first major singles title came in the 1999 US Open, and she soon took off into the upper echelon of the tennis world. She and her sister, Venus, dominated women’s tennis, reaching 4 consecutive Finals from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open. Serena beat Venus in all 4 Finals.

Serena had last won the US Open in 2014 and was hoping to pull out a storybook win against the field this year, but the same wasn’t meant to be.

She can go off into the sunset assured of her status as one of the GOATs of tennis and the undisputed GOAT of women’s tennis. Her skill set transcends gender, and her level of dominance and longevity over the sport might not be replicated for a long time.
