With LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Lakers aren’t in the business of wasting an opportunity to improve. This summer, with various free agents on the table, L.A. has been connected to a number of veteran players, from Brook Lopez to Bruce Brown.

Their biggest decision of all, of course, will be at the point guard position. While Kyrie Irving is the biggest fish available right now, the Lakers may be more inclined to keep one of their own instead. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, D’Angelo Russell is expected to return to the Purple and Gold on a mid-level, two-year contract.

“The other strong word out of Hollywood is that the Lakers are trending toward bringing back D’Angelo Russell after acquiring him from the [Minnesota] Timberwolves at February’s trade deadline,” wrote Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports. “Early indications are that Russell and the Lakers could come to terms on a two-year, $40 million deal with the second year a team option or non-guaranteed.”

Last season, D’Lo averaged 17.4 points, 6.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game on 48% shooting. While he was largely inconsistent in the playoffs, he still made himself valuable for the Lakers thanks to his playmaking and perimeter shooting.

This summer, many experts predicted that the Lakers would look to upgrade from D’Lo to add a third star to the roster, but it seems LA is keen on running it back.

What’s Next For The Lakers?

With free agency just a few hours away now, the Lakers no doubt have a plan for who they want to pursue. Besides retaining their own guys, the team has been connected to a number of players, like Kevin Love and Brook Lopez.

“Among the players L.A. has interest in signing with the non-tax midlevel are Denver Nuggets forward Bruce Brown and Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez,” sources told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Only time will tell how this plays out for Los Angeles, but one has to imagine they have a couple of moves up their sleeve, given how close they were to making the Finals in 2023.

Love him or hate him, D’Lo will determine how LA navigates this offseason and what kind of players they will pursue with their cap.
