Luka Doncic spoke to the media after the Dallas Mavericks preseason opener in the 2023 Abu Dhabi Games where he revealed to Fadeaway World the status of his health after complaining about injuries during the FIBA World Cup.

“My injury is way better. It’s improving every day.”

Doncic was struggling with an unnamed thigh injury through the end of last season for the Mavericks and then again during the FIBA World Cup. Doncic has been playing through the injury but has had a hard time in those games, especially as the FIBA World Cup dragged on.

Luka had a great game today in very limited minutes. He put up a show in the 16 minutes of basketball he played in the preseason matchup, putting up up an effortless 25 points in the loss.

It is a preseason game, so it’s unfair to expect Doncic to play serious minutes, but it does seem the Mavs want to protect their two stars as much as they can. Neither Luka nor Kyrie Irving ended up playing in the second half, even though the Mavs could have used their offense when they cut a 23-point deficit to just five points in the third quarter.

Luka Doncic Is An Offensive Wizard

Doncic scored 25 points in a showing that looked like regular Luka basketball. The Slovenian point guard led the league in first-quarter scoring last year and played the entirety of the first quarter in Abu Dhabi.

Fadeaway World asked Doncic about the magic behind his offensive skills. The guard thinks it’s because of the experience he has.

“About my offense, I don’t know. I’ve been playing basketball for a very long time, so maybe it’s that.”

He was clearly being coy, as everyone who’s watched the NBA in the last five years knows that Doncic came into the league with this offensive brilliance. He doesn’t consider himself a scorer but walked to a 32.4 points-per-game scoring average last season. If he hadn’t gotten injured with 0 points on the board in a game last season, he would’ve been in the scoring title race late into the season.

This season is supposed to be a big year for the Mavericks, as Doncic ends this season and becomes extension-eligible. After missing the playoffs last year and fielding a fun but unimpressive roster this season, the Mavericks will feel the pressure of putting Doncic in a position to succeed. He’s clearly happy with Kyrie Irving as his backcourt partner, but the star may ultimately need more than that.

The offense can be other-worldly, but it doesn’t mean anything if Doncic and the Mavericks as a whole don’t improve on defense.
